ABCs of Common Foods

Note:  This page is a constant work in progress as I add foods and update brands.  It may never be complete.  :)

Breads- This is one item that I constantly have to read labels.  Many, many brands contain milk.
  • Sandwich bread varies from brand to brand.  Sometimes the white will contain milk, but the wheat bread won't.  Our go-to bread (Shawn prefers white bread- surprise, surprise!) is Kroger brand.
  • Most brown and serve dinner rolls are milk-free.
  • Most fluffy yeast rolls (Aunt Millie's, Hawaiian Bread) DO have milk.
  • Most Italian/French bread from the bakery is milk-free.  Any frozen garlic bread will have butter, and therefore milk.
  • Typically, plain bagels and English muffins are milk-free.
  • Most biscuits have milk, so we avoid those.
  • Refrigerated crescent rolls vary- read the label.
  • Refrigerated pizza crust is usually milk-free.
  • Rhodes frozen rolls (and frozen bread dough) are milk-free.
Brownies- Some brands contain milk, so read the label. The brands below apply to plain brownie mix- no mix ins, no toppings.
  • Meijer brand brownie mix is milk-free
  • Pillsbury brownie mix is milk-free
Butter- Fortunately, Shawn can have margarine, so I use that in my cooking.  Hooray!

Cheese- Shawn's favorite is Galaxy Nutritional Foods Rice Shreds (cheddar and mozzarella).

Chicken (frozen breaded)- Several brands contain milk in the breading.  Our go to brand is Tyson.

Chocolate chips- We buy the huge bag of GFS brand chocolate chips.  They don't contain milk.  I've heard that there are other brands out there that don't contain milk either, but I haven't found them in stores.  So, we just make the trek to GFS every once in a while.

Cookies-
  • Oreo cookies are milk-free.  Not all generics are- read the label.
  • Krusteaz has some cookie mixes that are milk-free.  The Snickerdoodle and Sugar cookies mixes are okay.
  • Betty Crocker bagged sugar cookie mix is milk-free.
Ice Cream- Favorites include:
  • Purely Decadent
  • So Delicious
Mashed Potatoes (instant)-
  • Betty Crocker Potato Buds are milk-free.  Substitute soy milk in the preparation.
Muffins- Shawn stays away from muffins when we eat out.  Most contain milk.
  • Martha White muffin mix does not contain milk.  You add milk when you make them, but I substitute soy milk, and they taste just fine.
  • Betty Crocker Cinnamon Steusel muffins also do not contain milk.  I added soy milk to the mix.  Yummy!
Salad Dressing- Must read labels!
  • We like the Kraft Light Zesty Italian (some Italian dressings do contain milk, so watch out!) and Kraft Light Raspberry Vinaigrette.
Whipped Cream
  • Meijer brand Whipped Topping (not light or fat free) does not contain milk.
